AWDA CUTS SOD FOR SIX-UNIT CLASSROOM BLOCK AT KONI
The Ada West District Assembly (AWDA) on Wednesday, the 20th of May 2026 cut sod for construction of a 6-Unit Classroom Block at Koni, one of the communities in the Sege-Koni Electoral Area in the district.

The project which comes with twelve-seater toilet facility and is to be funded by Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) was lobbied for by the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Hon. (Apostle) Daniel Keshi Bessey, and expected to be completed in 15 months according to the District Engineer, Mr. Eric Asiwome Amekoenyo.

In his remark, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Modjifa Tanihu J.J.F. Mills-Nkrumah said that during the 2024 electioneering campaign, the MP (one of the candidates contesting the December 2024 Parliamentary election) promised that if the people of Koni voted for him, he would change the face of Koni and indicated that this is the beginning of the manifestation of the MP’s promise.

The MP on the other hand reiterated what the DCE said and pledged his commitment to support all stakeholders to improving education in the district. The MP however said that he had observed that when parents bought funeral cloths, they had to also buy for their children and appealed to parents to pay more attention to the education of their children instead. The MP therefore tasked the community to ensure that they take good care of the project from its inception to completion because the project is for the community. The MP also reiterated government commitment to housing program for teachers as announced by the President of the Republic, H.E John Dramani Mahama and said he would be glad if land could be made available so he could lobby for teacher’s bungalow for the school.

The Ada West District Education Director, Dr. Stephen Arthur on his part thanked the DCE and the MP for the project as well as the community elders for giving land for the project and indicated, that since his appointment as Education Director, he has been committed to delivering on the goal of education to include access and inclusive education for all learners. The Education Director further stressed that government has been playing its part to ensure the goal of inclusive education and indicated the provision of school uniforms and sanitary pads to female learners as part of government commitment to enhance learning and disclosed that the District Education office few days ago had taken delivery of some new school uniforms, yet to be distributed.

Dr. Stephen Arthur also disclosed that Koni Basic School was not part of schools benefiting from the school feeding program but through the instrumentality of the DCE, Koni is now a beneficiary school of the feeding program and added, that the construction of the 6-Unit classroom block for the school is therefore a step towards achieving the goal of education. He therefore advised that parents should endeavor to send their children to school when they are 4 years as the right age to begin education.
In a related development, stakeholders after the sod cutting ceremony at Koni visited Kportsutsekope Basic School in the Lolonya Electoral Area where storm ripped off the roofing of the temporary JHS block leaving the leaners and the teachers helpless. The DCE told the community leaders that reports of the damage caused by the storm came to the attention of the Assembly through the NADMO Director, the Education Director and the Assembly member for the area, and hence, the reason for the visitation. However, the DCE indicated that it has been part of the plans of the Assembly to put up a 6-Unit Classroom Block for the School before the incidence happened. However, with turn of event, he would discuss the issue with stakeholders including the MP to see how quick the Assembly can respond to the need of the School earlier than planned.

In a brief meeting with the teachers of the Kportsutsekope Basic School, the Head Teacher, Sebbie Evans Amartey indicated that the challenges of classroom space has been their worries which got complicated by the storm few days ago and appealed to the Assembly through the DCE to come to their aid.
Both the DCE and the MP assured the teachers and pledged their commitment to see how best the Assembly can respond to the need of the school within reasonable time.
