Floods Submerge Ada West District

Ghana at the moment is going through some moment of distress consequent on the rains of Sunday, 28th June through to Monday, the 29th of June 2026 and Ada West was not left out.

However, the sad story of remote districts like that of Ada West was that, because the rains were widespread with series of damages and some casualties recorded in the Capital city, Accra, it had shifted all attentions to Accra as though the rains were limited only to Accra, and also probably because there was no causalities recorded so far in areas like Ada West, though heavily affected by the rains.

So, like the popular saying “until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter”, the people of Ada West lamented and cried for external assistance as a result of the damages caused by the said floods to their communities and property when a team led by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Hon. Modjifa Tanihu J.J.F. Mills-Nkrumah on Tuesday, 30th June 2026 visited some communities affected by the floods.

It was indeed heartbreaking when the team got to the Luhour Community and saw, like some other communities earlier visited, that, the whole Luhour community had been submerged by the floods and there was no indication as to when the water could subside. In two compounds for instance occupied respectively by the families of Dzeaguwemi and Ofoewemi, about ten (10) mad houses were completely pulled down by the flood whilst in the Koluedor-Mahem community about thirteen (13) mad houses belonging to fifty-one (51) households were collapsed with several other concrete houses affected in the two communities.

Whereas at the time of visitation to the Koluedor-Mahem community the flood waters subsided but community members were still domiciled in the Primary school building for fears of more rains as the clouds were still threatening to rain, in the Luhour community, almost every single compound was occupied by flood waters with some to the knee-level, and according to the Assembly member for the area, Hon. Jonathan T. Asamanuah about one hundred and twenty-five (125) houses were affected in the Luhour community.

What could not be grossed over however, was the lamentation by some of the members in the Luhour community who instead of creating an engaging environment to share their experiences with the team rather directed anger to the Assembly that they had experienced some amount of rains about a month ago and NADMO was there and promised to dredge some areas to divert rain waters into the lagoon but did not do that until the heavy downpour that had submerged the entire community and asked what was NADMO there to do?

Speaking to a community member at Luhour who pointed to the water level on the walls (which evidently hit the window level) before it subsided to the level it was during our visit, he has this to say “if there should be another heavy rain within the week to last for hours, the integrity of most houses would be seriously affected and can lead to casualties”. The community members therefore appealed to government through the Ada West Assembly to come to their aid as some of them indicated that it was obvious that the problem at hand is beyond the Ada West District Assembly and needed the intervention of central government.

Today’s outreach came on the back of yesterday’s visitation led by the DCE and the NADMO team to communities such as Anyamam, Akplabanya,Sonkope, Nakomkope inter alia within the Amyaman zone of NADMO operations. Other communities that were affected by the floods are Bonikope, Adjumanikope, Madagbe, Koluedor, Tofloko, Anukpenya, Nuhalenya, Lolonyo, Sege, Goi, Kportsutsekope, but some of these communities are yet to be visited by the team.
