FOOD AND DRUGS AUTHORITY EDUCATES CORNMILL OPERATORS ON GOOD HYGIENE PRACTICES
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), in collaboration with the District Environmental Health Unit, held an educational session for corn mill operators at the Ada West District Assembly Hall on Tuesday 27th May, 2025.
The purpose of the program was to sensitize corn millers on the importance of good hygiene practices in food processing, with the ultimate aim of improving public health and ensuring food safety within the district.
The program was also part of a broader initiative by the FDA and Environmental Health to build the capacity of local food processors and ensure compliance with food safety standards to protect consumers in general.
The session brought together corn millers from communities across the district, including Ceaserkope, Sege, Koluedor, Nakomkope, Addokope and others.
It was facilitated by the District Environmental Health Officer. The staff of the assembly including Heads of Department were also present to learn these hygienic practices. A considerable number of invited guests also graced this occasion.
During the session, officials from the FDA educate the participants on various aspect of hygiene. Emphasis was placed on personal hygiene, such as the importance of regular hand washing, wearing clean and appropriate clothing, and the use of protective gear like aprons, gloves, and hairnets while working. They were also educated on the need to keep the milling environment clean, dispose of waste properly and control pests to prevent contamination.
In addition, the facilitators explained the significance of regular cleaning and maintenance of milling machines to avoid the build-up of residue that could pose health risks. The corn millers were also introduced to relevant FDA regulations and the importance of adhering to these standards in their daily operations. The session was highly interactive, with participants asking questions and taking part in practical demonstrations.
The event was well received by the participants, who expressed appreciation for the knowledge shared and pledged to improve hygiene practices at their respective workplace. The FDA and the Environmental Health Unit assured the corn millers of their support and stated that they should also endeavour to educate their customers on good hygiene practices in their various communities.
In conclusion, the educational program held at the Ada West District Assembly Hall was a significant success. It strengthened the relationship between local corn millers and regulatory bodies, and laid the foundation for improved hygiene standards across the district. The initiative is expected to contribute meaningfully to public health and food safety in Ada West District.
